What does an aging-in-place shower add to the cost?
The features that make a shower safe for the long run each carry a knowable price. This Old House prices installed grab bars at $150 to $500 each and a fold-down shower seat at $300 to $800 in the same 2026 guide. The big line is the entry itself. A curbless shower runs $8,000 to $15,000, because the floor has to be rebuilt so water drains with no curb at all.
There is a real number behind the marketing words. The ADA standard for an accessible shower allows a lip of no more than half an inch, and the edge has to be beveled, meaning sloped instead of square. A flat, zero-threshold entry is the best of all, because it still works if someone later needs a walker or a wheelchair. Does Medicare pay for a tub-to-shower conversion?
No. Original Medicare, Parts A and B, does not pay for bathroom remodels, walk-in tubs, or showers. Healthline's medically reviewed guide says it plainly. Budget as if Medicare pays nothing toward the build.
Medicare may pay for what it calls durable medical equipment, like grab bars or a commode chair, if your doctor says you need it. Some Medicare Advantage plans also include a home modification benefit that can cover shower equipment. Plans differ, so read your own policy before you count on it.
Does a tub-to-shower conversion need a permit in Florida?
In practice, yes. Moving a drain is plumbing work, and plumbing is exactly what Florida's new permit exemption leaves out. House Bill 803, effective July 2026, exempts some non-structural projects under $7,499 in owner-occupied homes. But it excludes plumbing and electrical work, and a real conversion touches both.
Which office issues the permit depends on your address, and it is not the same across our service area. Three questions separate a complete quote from a cheap one.
